As Jesus entered the holy city of Jerusalem, the crowds chanted, “Hosanna in the highest, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” The word Hosanna means “Help! Save! Rescue!” The people were calling out for Jesus to rescue them. We have discussed our need for rescue. Our sins bind us, making us powerless. This is an enemy that lures us into his deception and eventual isolation from God. He is intent on our destruction. However, God the Father “sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:17 Jesus’ name means “God (YHWH) saves/rescues.” YHWH is the way the Jews would write the divine name. So, the crowds were asking for a rescuer and Jesus came to rescue. His name is who He is. His name “is” what He “does.” Let’s pray to accept divine rescue in our own life wherever there is bondage, and then let us pray to answer the call to offer this to others whom God puts in our path.
