Jealous for Your Heart
This week we look closely at the desert, and particularly God using the desert to bring His people away from distractions and into an encounter with Him. Lent is our desert time to be “free from” the things that distract us to be “free for” God, who is trying to get our attention. God has always wanted us for Himself. He is jealous for our heart.
Exodus 20:4-5 says “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on earth beneath...for I am a jealous God.” He is jealous because He knows there are no other idols that can offer what He offers. Everything is smoke and mirrors. God knows that once we encounter His heart, we will more readily want to stay with Him rather than seek other idols. So perhaps this week we can courageously permit God to take away anything from us that would enslave our hearts, thus making us unavailable for Him.
