Alpha Means the Beginning
Why is Sacred Heart putting all this time and energy into a small group movement? It’s very simple. They work. We live in a world where people are increasingly more distant from each other. Social media and the Internet have given us a false sense of connection to the world around us. The breakdown of the family unit over time has also increased this feeling of disconnect. If we take a look at what fueled the early church, it was a small group of people that lived in a close community. Fr. Michael will be looking at the Book of Acts and how its contents outline the rule of life of the early Christian Community. Even Jesus had a small group of his closest disciples; they are called the Apostles. No one can deny the effect they had on the early church. So why “Discipleship Groups?" For most of us, it’s hard for our faith lives to survive from Sunday to Sunday. Life eventually catches up with us, and our faith slowly becomes just another part of our already stretched-thin lives. We need support, accompaniment, and the prayers of our friends. ALPHA is just the beginning for discipleship groups. After the ALPHA experience, the hope is that these groups will keep meeting, keep praying, and keep walking with one another.
What if our faith life isn’t meant to be survived? What if our faith lives can thrive in the midst of a small group of people who are on the same journey as us? Over the next few weeks, we will be breaking open how these Discipleship Groups can have a transformational effect on our lives as individuals. I encourage you to listen in and to pray about what they can do for your faith life.
