Announcement of Upcoming Changes to 3rd-5th Grade Faith Formation
The Catechism of the Church teaches that “Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children;” and “through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children.” This vision, along with recent conversations with surrounding parishes, has led us to a new model for our 3rd-5th grade Faith Formation, now called Family Faith Formation (FFF). We are excited to move to a family catechesis program that empowers our parents to truly be the Domestic Church, the church at home.
What does it look like?
Once a month 3rd-5th-grade students and parents will attend class on campus. They will receive a unit from their book to take home and complete with their family. They will return the completed unit test at the next month’s Family Faith Formation date. They will also have time in class to complete projects related to the unit/season. The last part of the class will be spent in small faith sharing groups we’re calling “Grow Groups.” This is an opportunity for them to discuss their faith with peers, giving them the experience to express their relationship with God later in life.
While the students are in their class, parents will have the great privilege of listening to and talking with a dynamic speaker. Topics will focus on issues that parents with children face, as well as how to grow in your own personal faith. It is our hope to spiritually feed both child and parent to grow as a more powerful and faithful family. While it is a significant change from our former model, it is one that has proven to work. Some parent quotes from a neighboring parish were “I never opened a Bible with my 5th-grade son until this program.” “Our marriage got closer because we were doing these lessons together as a family.” “I love to see the awe in their faces.” What a wonderful way to intentionally bring God into family time!
When will it be?
The monthly FFF on campus class will take place at the same time as our previously scheduled Faith Formation classes, which is Sunday from 3:30-4:45. The first one is September 9. At this first FFF, students will meet their teacher and class while parents receive an orientation. This will also be a time for questions about the program and year. On campus FFF meetings for the year are: September 9, October 7, November 4, December 2, January 6, February 3, March 17, and April 14. All meetings will be from 3:30pm-4:45pm.
We look forward to seeing the beautiful fruits from this model as our families grow stronger together and with Christ. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, contact Cristy at email@example.com.
Please note that 1st grade and 2nd grade are not part of this change. First grade will still have a year of CGS/classroom setting that will set a solid foundation to build upon. Second grade will still have 12 sessions of our new sacrament prep program as previously planned.
